Disclaimer: Not everyone who goes through menopause identifies as a woman and not all people who identify as women go through menopause. At Jayla, our core audience is people who identify as women, so we primarily use the word “women.” However, we’re working on specific content for people going through menopause who might not identify women. Jayla's medical advisor, Dr. Zoe Rodriguez, addresses common myths surrounding women’s health

As an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), I’ve encountered many misconceptions and stereotypes about women’s health. I care deeply about debunking these myths and equipping women with accurate, evidence-based information. By doing so, I work to break down barriers and foster a more informed, inclusive, and supportive community. Women deserve access to clear, reliable guidance so they can feel confident in making decisions that impact their health and future.

One common myth I often address is the belief that hormonal birth control causes significant weight gain. While some women may notice changes in their weight, extensive studies show that modern contraceptive methods are designed to minimize this effect. Providing women with accurate information helps them make informed decisions about their reproductive health, free from fear or misinformation.

Another misconception I frequently challenge is the assumption that a hysterectomy is the only solution for conditions like fibroids or endometriosis. While surgery may be necessary in certain cases, many alternative treatments exist, including minimally invasive procedures, hormonal options, and non-hormonal therapies. By exploring these options collaboratively, I help my patients take control of their health and well-being while feeling supported every step of the way. It’s about empowering women to be active participants in their treatment plans.

I also focus on breaking down cultural and societal barriers that prevent women from seeking care. Some women may hesitate to discuss topics like menstrual health or sexual wellness due to stigma or shame. Creating a safe, non-judgmental space allows my patients to share their concerns openly. Beware if you visit me—I’ll ask about your menstrual, sexual, and urinary health to ensure no topic is overlooked! This approach is crucial in removing the silence and shame that often surrounds women’s health.

Through my work, I’m committed to debunking myths and fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. By equipping women with accurate information and compassionate care, I want to encourage a new generation to take charge of their health and well-being and feel empowered in their choices. My goal is to help women feel confident in seeking the care they deserve, without hesitation or fear of judgment.
